The Story Behind
I really love exploring the symbolism of objects and creatures. The deer is a wonderful and incredibly atmospheric creature with very deep meaning.
Because they shed and regrow their antlers every year, they’ve always been seen as a symbol of growth, regeneration, and new beginnings. I think the reason we are so drawn to painting them is that they combine two opposites: strength and gentleness. A stag stands tall and proud, yet he is always alert and ready to vanish into the forest. Capturing that quiet dignity and sensitivity is a great challenge for any artist.
A Word from Alex
If you feel a pull to draw a deer, I believe it reflects a subconscious desire for growth or transformation. Back when I was going through psychoanalysis, I often felt a strong urge to draw animals, and I’ll never forget the deer I created during that time.
I actually have two drawings of them to share. One was done with pastels—to be honest, it’s not a medium I’ve fully mastered, but I still had a great time working with it. The second one is a digital piece I did in Procreate on my iPad. I stumbled across a photo in a magazine and decided to recreate it. Sometimes, I just want to capture a reference photo as accurately as possible, and using an Apple Pencil makes that process so much smoother. The key is finding a photo that isn’t overly complex; I personally love photos with clear silhouettes because they look amazing and are relatively easy to reproduce.
